Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are devices made to resemble cigarettes. Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching.
However, no rigorous scientific studies have shown that they are safe for use. Some people who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. But switching to e-cigarettes still exposes users to potentially serious ongoing health risks. It’s important to stop using all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, as soon as possible both to reduce health risks and to avoid staying addicted to nicotine.

Overall, comparisons of the particle-size distribution in aerosols from e-cigarettes found that the substances tested had particle distributions similar to the traditional e-liquids containing nicotine. "Our finding indicates that health care expenditures for a person who uses e-cigarettes are $2,024 more per year than for a person who doesn’t use any tobacco products," said lead author Yingning Wang, PhD, of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. Use of electronic cigarettes costs the United States $15 billion annually in health care expenditures – more than $2,000 per person a year – according to a study by researchers at the UC San Francisco School of Nursing. Between 2016 and 2022–2023, the proportion of people who both smoked regular (combustible) tobacco cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes increased, as did the proportion who currently used e‑cigarettes but did not use regular cigarettes.
In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "Generally Recognised as Safe" [54].
The Mountain state has fewer restrictions than Wyoming and allows the sale of e-cigarettes to people under 21. Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. To study the short-term impacts of vaping, the researchers performed MRI exams on 31 healthy, non-smoking adults before and after vaping a nicotine-free e-cigarette. Comparing the pre- and post-MRI data, the single episode of vaping resulted in reduced blood flow and impaired endothelial function in the large (femoral) artery that supplies blood to the thigh and leg. The endothelium, which lines the inside surface of blood vessels, is essential to proper blood circulation. Once the endothelium is damaged, arteries thicken, and blood flow to the heart and the brain can be cut off, resulting in heart attack or stroke.
E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "puff bars," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." E-cigarettes are devices which produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. The nicotine in e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes is highly addictive. While these devices may help some people quit smoking, there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes can pose serious health risks, especially to people who do not smoke traditional cigarettes.
One chemical, known as 6-methyl nicotine, has been shown in rodent experiments to be far more potent than nicotine in targeting the brain’s nicotine receptors and more toxic than nicotine. Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body ― heart and blood vessel disease; lung disease; cancer (almost anywhere in your body); and impacts to your bones, eyes, teeth, gums, fertility and pregnancy. Individual businesses can prohibit the use of vape devices indoors but this is not required by state law. More adults 18 to 24 years old used e-cigarettes (11.0%, or roughly 3.4 million people) compared with adults 25 to 44 (6.5%) or 45 and older (2.0%). The latest research, published in a July National Center for Health Statistics data brief, shows that in 2021, e-cigarette use was highest among adults 18 to 24 years old.
Separate studies have shown that newer e-cigarettes may deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could explain the recent findings. The investigators acknowledged that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. They noted that their study did not evaluate the risks of youth e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used commercial tobacco product among youth,1 so it is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them.

When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Before this study — which Truth Initiative funded — there hasn’t been any data available on how to help teens quit vaping, according to the researchers. According to the study authors, prior research has already linked the nicotine in e-cigarette vapor to lung cancers in mice. "The amount of smoke the mice were exposed to was similar to a person who had vaped for about three to six years," they noted. "This study presents clear evidence showing that vaping in addition to smoking can increase your risk for lung cancer," said Bittoni, who works at the university's Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. One of the ingredients in tobacco is the mood-altering drug nicotine.

These figures coincide with additional research that indicates an overall increase in e-cigarette use. Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling an aerosol produced by a vaping product, such as an electronic cigarette.
Cumberland County piloted CATCH My Breath in 2022, and had teachers in the restorative justice classrooms of Howard Learning Academy Middle School and Pine Forest High School run the program. The pilot was enough of a success that the county is now training one person in every middle and high school in the district to implement the program on a needs-basis in restorative justice classrooms this school year. There were also participants in a "waitlist" group, who received neither text messages through the This is Quitting program nor the assessment-only follow-up messages. The main danger with a closed-system vape comes from the lithium-ion battery. If you try to charge it using an incompatible device, there's a small but real chance of a fire or explosion. If you're new to vaping, we'd suggest starting out with a disposable vape pen. Because these devices are pre-assembled and standardized, there's no need to worry about making a dangerous mistake with the power supply that causes overheating. There's no e-liquid at all in this device, just natural, food-grade flavor extracts. And third-party testing has confirmed that the E-Z contains no allergens, carcinogens, or toxins of any kind.
A Foundation-led study presented at the 2024 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco annual meeting found that monthly e-cigarette sales in California declined by 41% after statewide restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products took effect. However, the report also noted that the tobacco industry continues to market products to offset these declines, including non-menthol cigarettes that contain other cooling chemicals. We engage individuals and groups to make change in their communities, innovate ways to end nicotine addiction, and join forces with collaborators committed to preventing youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empowering quitting for all. That's hard to say — the potential health risks of vaping CBD are still hotly debated.
Nonetheless, adults who smoke who switch to using e-cigarettes expose themselves to potentially serious ongoing health risks. If they are unable to quit e-cigarettes on their own, they should seek help from a health care professional or quitline. Individuals who are not yet able to stop using e-cigarettes should be strongly discouraged from simultaneous, or "dual," use of any combustible tobacco products, including cigarettes. Continuing to smoke exposes the individual to enormous harms, irrespective of whether the individual is using e-cigarettes part of the time. All individuals should also be strongly counseled to not revert to smoking. Some look like a regular cigarette, but many resemble everyday products like pens, USB drives, highlighting markers, or colorful toy-like items.
The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing. With a 399.73% increase in retail e-cigarette sales (excluding internet sales and tobacco-specialty stores) from 2015 through 2020, the environmental consequences of e-cigarette waste are enormous. The fourth-generation vaporizers can also be customized and come with different types of heating coils — some intended for vaporizing solids, not liquids. In general, people using e‑cigarettes did not report doing so in order to quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. In 2022–2023, only 1 in 5 (21%) people who had ever used e‑cigarettes reported that they first used e‑cigarettes to help them quit smoking (Figure 5). The most common reason people gave for using e‑cigarettes was out of curiosity (58%).
The 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, released in November by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration, found that about 2.1 million middle and high school students were e-cigarette users. Get more information on small cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and the diagnosis of lung cancer stages. Also, "it is clear from the scientific literature that a variety of toxic compounds besides nicotine are present in aerosolized e-liquid," the researchers added. These chemicals have been linked to lung inflammation, chronic coughs, shortness of breath and lung disease.
Death from nicotine poisoning is not common in adults because of their larger body size. However, using more than one type of nicotine-containing product at the same time can increase your risk. As the name suggests, cigalike kits are designed to look and feel like tobacco cigarettes. Cigarette-style vape kits are easy to use and, rather than being refillable, take prefilled flavour cartridges known as cartomizers or refills.

Since the end of 2019, it is illegal to sell vaping products to people younger than 21 years.
As with high school students, e-cigarette use was much more common than cigarette use. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can also be called e-cigs, e-hookahs, vapes, vape pens, personal diffusers or diffuser sticks. But one vape can contain the equivalent of 50 cigarettes of nicotine in the one product. They also contain a complex combination of chemicals including nicotine, nickel, tin, arsenic, chlorine and lead. These substances can be harmful to the body, with different flavourings helping to mask these poisons when they are taken into the body. An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a battery-operated device that heats liquid nicotine, flavoring, and other additives to create an aerosol.
E-cigarettes are not risk-free but are believed to cause less harm than smoking. They do not burn tobacco or produce tar or carbon monoxide — two of the most harmful parts of tobacco smoke. Smoking can raise your risk for periodontal disease or disease affecting the gums.
At least one of the three chemicals was detected in 47 of the 51 flavors tested. Diacetyl was detected above the laboratory limit of detection in 39 of the flavors tested. These laws prohibit smoking and the use of e-cigarettes in indoor areas of private worksites, restaurants, and bars. In our fight to end youth and young adult nicotine addiction, we focus on the issues that matter most.
The most important points to know are that the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are still unknown, and all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, can pose health risks to the user. The tobacco industry has co-opted the term harm reduction to further its own interests of reduced tobacco product regulation and expand its user base. E-cigarette use among adults has been more stable, with adult use remaining relatively low since around 2012. Recent data, however, showed a slight uptick in adult e-cigarette use from 4.5% in 2021 to 6% in 2022. While switching completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes can be less harmful than smoking, many adult smokers use e-cigarettes and cigarettes concurrently — increasing overall exposure to nicotine. Randomized control trials provide growing evidence that e-cigarettes with nicotine can increase quitting rates when compared to nicotine replacement therapies.
There are also reports of lung illnesses and deaths related to inhalation of certain vaping oils into the lungs, which have no way to filter out toxic ingredients. You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable and disposable vaping devices) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about vaping. Truth Initiative supports regulation that encourages the development of consistently safer nicotine delivery alternatives that allow smokers to quit tobacco altogether or switch completely to a much less harmful, well-regulated product.
Although e-liquids do not contain tobacco, they contain chemicals, usually including flavorings, and often contain nicotine, which is addictive. Aerosol from e-cigarettes can also include cancer-causing chemicals, and diacetyl, a chemical used in some e-cigarette flavorings, has been linked with serious lung disease. Some people (most commonly youths or young adults) have experienced seizures while using e-cigarettes.
They are not recommended for non-smokers and cannot be sold to people under 18 years old. In recent years, e-cigarettes have become a very popular stop smoking aid in the UK. Passengers are required to take effective measures for preventing accidental activation of the heating element of the device when transporting the devices. See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
The decision lends new credibility to vaping companies’ longstanding claim that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. E-cigarettes have been sold in the U.S. since 2007 but in recent years their potential benefits for smokers have been overshadowed by their use by adolescents and teens. Vaping nicotine has not been thoroughly evaluated in scientific studies. For now, not enough data exists on the safety of e-cigarettes, how the health effects compare to traditional cigarettes, and if they are helpful for people trying to quit smoking.
There's no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you. If you're pregnant, licensed NRT products such as patches and gum are the recommended option to help you stop smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) has been widely used for many years to help people stop smoking and is a safe treatment. In the UK, e-cigarettes are tightly regulated for safety and quality.
Further, synthetic nicotine may pose challenges in countries that regulate products with tobacco-derived nicotine. "We are beginning to see the robust supply chains and lack of enforcement that supports the illicit e-vapor market (is) enabling increased illicit activity across multiple tobacco categories," Gifford said. Three years after puffing my first e-cig had led to me vaping all the goddamn time. All night when I’m out with friends and now all day while I’m at work.
"More research about the health effects of alternative tobacco products is critically needed to put science behind the regulation of the tobacco industry." As the debate blazes, deep-pocketed big tobacco investors are buying up e-cig companies, injecting millions of dollars into the market and banking on a bright future for the devices. More than 100 e-cigarette companies are now jockeying for the business of smokers and nonsmokers alike.
The flavored vape juice inside contains only vegetable glycerine and organic fruit extracts. That means it's free from all the harmful chemicals we mentioned above. It's a stripped-down, vegan-friendly, nicotine-free vaping experience. When I smoked cigarettes, I dealt with inconveniences due to my addiction. I would be forced to leave the company of my friends and family to go stand outdoors, like an outcast or lesser human, so that I could prevent myself from having a withdrawal meltdown.
They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.
However, the state's largely rural landscape and small population could be partly to blame for its high youth vaping rate. About 80 percent of Wyoming's residents live in rural areas, as much of the land area is used for farming and national parks. Researchers combed through state-by-state data from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an advocacy group aimed at stopping youth smoking. Since 2020, emergency department visits in Virginia by patients who said they vape jumped significantly, while visits by those who use traditional tobacco declined, according to stats from Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
In 2017, the campaign began prioritizing e-cigarette prevention messaging to combat increasing youth vaping rates. "The Real Cost" campaign also educates teens on the health consequences of smoking cigarettes. Given that there is no safe tobacco product, youth and adults who do not use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarettes. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into your lungs. E-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol; cigarettes burn tobacco, which creates smoke.
Beginning July 1, 2019, Illinois law prohibits the sale of tobacco products, including these products, to people younger than age 21. The smoke also caused damage to the lungs and bladders of mice, indicating that it may increase the risks of developing lung and bladder cancer. Since e-cigarettes arrived in the U.S. in 2007, they have been investigated by addiction researchers as possible cessation devices for adults trying to quit combustible, or regular, cigarettes.

Babies may be born with underdeveloped lungs if the pregnant person smokes during pregnancy. Smoking damages the airways, air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, and cilia, which are tiny hair-like structures that prevent dirt and mucus from entering your lungs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The authors also described moderate evidence suggesting that taking a puff from an e-cigarette increases blood pressure.
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health — smoking harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly one-third of deaths from heart disease are the result of smoking and secondhand smoke. The Food and Drug Administration has not found any e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit. If smokers are ready to quit smoking for good, they should call QUITNOW or talk with their doctor about finding the best way to quit using proven methods and FDA-approved treatments and counseling. Due to what has been called an ‘epidemic’ of youth use of these products, FDA has prioritized prevention efforts. The agency has taken a multitude of actions to keep ENDS out of the hands of youth, from policy making to enforcement to education. While e-cigarettes can generally be a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes, the use of e-cigarettes is not risk-free. These products deliver harmful chemicals and contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Moreover, given the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, further high-quality research on both short- and long-term health outcomes is needed. The longer ENDS and other e-cigarettes are on the market, the more information we know about their impacts on health.
For a summary of Iowa youth vaping/e-cigarette use statistics from the 2018 IYS, check out our infographic and factsheet. Adolescents are more likely to use e-cigarettes than any other tobacco product, and rates of e-cigarette use have risen sharply in recent years. Population-level interventions to reduce tobacco use include price increases, mass media campaigns, and smoke-free policies that include e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes, also known as electronic smoking devices (ESD) and vaporizer cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that emit doses of nicotine and non-nicotine vaporized solutions that are inhaled.
That figure is controversial and might be a little high, says Kenneth Warner, a tobacco policy researcher at the University of Michigan. But, he adds, "The worst critics of e-cigarettes would probably argue they're a half to two-thirds less dangerous. But from a practical view, they're probably on the order of 80% to 85% less dangerous, at least." A 2015 expert review from Public Health England estimated e-cigs are 95% less harmful than the real thing.
Parent groups and anti-tobacco advocates immediately criticized the decision, which comes after years of pushing regulators to keep menthol and other flavors that can appeal to teens off the market. In 2023, 309.4 million units of e-cigarette products were sold in U.S. retail stores nationwide. An e-cigarette’s appearance is determined by the shape and size of its components.
The review authors conclude that further research could help untangle how vapers’ bodies develop disease. These types of studies, they say, promise to identify early indicators of—and ultimately treatments for—vaping-related disease. While some tout e-cigarettes as a solution to quitting conventional smoking, the truth about relative risks is complicated, says Crotty Alexander, who is a researcher in addition to providing patient care and teaching.
Prior to that, it was the Wild West, where a variety of companies started making and selling products with their own personal spin. Per the survey, 10.0% of students (2.80 million) reported current use of any tobacco product; 12.6% (1.97 million) high school students and 6.6% (800,000) middle school students reported current use of any tobacco product. Importantly, the researchers found strong evidence of the program's effectiveness among key subgroups defined by race, ethnicity, gender, higher levels of nicotine dependence, smoking and other substance use, mental health challenges, and household dysfunction. "For many years, healthcare providers, teachers, and parents have been asking how to help teens quit vaping," said Dr. Amanda Graham, Chief Health Officer at Truth Initiative and principal investigator of the study.
E-cigarette use has remained relatively low and stable among adult users since around 2012, although use has gone up slightly among adults recently, from 4.5% in 2021 to 6% in 2022. In 2022, the greatest e-cigarette use among adults was among 23- to 24-year-olds, 22.8% of whom were current users, according to Monitoring the Future. Juul’s C.E.O., Kevin Burns, who is fifty-four, has a friendly dad-who-loves-his-vacation-house demeanor. Burns described Juul to me as a "cigarette-killing company." Before he accepted the job, he said, he convened an informal focus group in his kitchen with his son, who’s in high school, and a few of his son’s friends. He asked them why they had these things, when they got them, how prevalent they were. "We have frustrations about how the product is glorified on social media," he told me. I admitted to Winickoff that I was probably endangering my lungs as a weed smoker. He gamely pointed out that I could look into ingested forms of marijuana, and noted that my brain was in a much more stable place than it had been when I was twenty-one.
However, within the adult demographic, 12.7 percent of 18- to 24-year-old adults and 21.3 percent of males, ages 18-24, are "current users" of e-cigarettes. The e-cigarette device (Vype ePod1.0, Nicoventures Trading Ltd., Blackburn, UK) consists of a metallic outer device case, a printed circuit board to control the device, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery (350 mAh) and an e-cigarette cartridge (Fig. 1). The voltage ranges from 2.2 to 3.1 V and is not adjustable by the user. The device has dimensions (h × w × d) of 104.2 × 19.1 × 10.5 mm and a power output of 6.5 ± 0.5 W. The cartridges or pods consist of a plastic case holding the ceramic wick material and a flat metal heating element (NiCr, 0.8 –1.4-Ω resistance). Each pod is pre-filled with Vype e-liquid (1.9 mL) and is magnetically attached to the device.
Whichever vape you choose, make sure you use it daily to help you make the switch from cigarettes. A vape bar, pod device or vape pen are good choices, as they are discreet, make small clouds and can give high amounts of nicotine. You can use patches with a vape if you need to, as these give ongoing support by releasing nicotine slowly. Some people find vaping helps them because the hand-to-mouth action is like smoking, plus you get similar sensations, like throat hit (the "kick" in the back of your throat when you inhale).
Surgeon General’s recommendation urging those who influence youth, young adults and people who are pregnant to discourage nicotine use in any form, including e-cigarettes. To protect kids now, states and cities must also continue their growing efforts to end the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, as well as other flavored tobacco products. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are part of a category of products called Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs), which are designed to mimic combustible tobacco cigarettes and, in most cases, contain varying levels of nicotine. Our compassionate providers can help both you and your child understand the dangers of vaping and provide resources that help people quit using tobacco products like e-cigarettes. During this time, the brain is constantly rewiring itself, which makes it far more vulnerable to nicotine addiction. This is part of why teens who vape are nearly three times more likely to begin smoking cigarettes.
Based on the current literature, it seems that several factors have led to the success of e-cigarette use as a smoking cessation tool. First, some e-cigarette flavours positively affect smoking cessation outcomes among smokers [102]. Second, e-cigarettes have been described to improve smoking cessation rate only among highly-dependent smokers and not among conventional smokers, suggesting that the individual degree of nicotine dependence plays an important role in this process [97]. Third, the general belief of their relative harmfulness to consumers' health compared with conventional combustible tobacco [103]. And finally, the exposure to point-of-sale marketing of e-cigarette has also been identified to affect the smoking cessation success [96].
Many people diagnosed with EVALI need to be treated in a hospital where medications can be closely monitored, and respiratory support is readily available. "I screen all of my patients, any child over age 12, since [vaping] can exacerbate underlying conditions like asthma," says Yale Medicine pediatric pulmonologist Pnina Weiss, MD. To learn more about e-cigarettes, here are resources from the American Cancer Society and the FDA. There are some e-cigarette brands that claim to be nicotine-free but have been found to contain nicotine. For medical questions, we encourage you to review our information with your doctor.
Once discarded into the environment, the filters create a large waste problem. Synthetic particulate filters may remove some of the tar before it reaches the smoker. The data underlying this article cannot be shared publicly due to the privacy of individuals that participated in the study.
And studies show that brands claiming to be "nicotine-free" may still have trace amounts. Developing teenage brains are especially sensitive to nicotine's addictive properties. Urgent action is needed to control e-cigarettes to protect children, as well as non-smokers and minimize health harms to the population. E-cigarettes as consumer products are not shown to be effective for quitting tobacco use at the population level. Instead, alarming evidence has emerged on adverse population health effects. Without urgent and effective public health action, e-cigarettes will lead to a new generation of nicotine-addicted individuals.
To view or search for local policies, search Tobacco Use Prevention and Control’s Policy Database. This video is about e-cigarettes and the emerging threat faced by rising youth use rates from Tobacco Control Network (TCN), Luci Longoria, and Dr. Brian King, FDA's Center for Tobacco Products Director. In addition, young adults were significantly more likely to use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes than adults 45 and older. Among young adults, men were slightly more likely to use e-cigarettes than women, while those who are white were more likely to use e-cigarettes than young Black adults and significantly more likely than young Asian or Hispanic/Latino adults. Some are small and look like USB drives or pens, while others are much larger.
The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals. The rapidly rising rates of use in young people and the high rates of daily use strongly suggest that many are addicted to nicotine and will have difficulty in stopping use of all tobacco products. One study found that people who use only e-cigarettes increase their risk of developing lung disease by about 30% compared with nonusers. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are devices used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
